The desert runs on a festival calendar that fills vacation homes months in advance, and the biggest weekends transform the whole valley: homes book out, restaurants pack, and the drive down valley slows to a crawl. Modernism Week in February is the signature Palm Springs event, a citywide celebration of midcentury architecture and design with home tours, talks, and parties. VillageFest is the weekly rhythm underneath everything: every Thursday night, Palm Canyon Drive closes to cars and becomes a street fair with food, produce, and local makers. Film, music, and pride celebrations round out the cooler months, and the town simply feels like an event when the season is on.
Coachella and Stagecoach, both held in spring at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, are the valley's largest events by far, several consecutive weekends of music that draw crowds from around the world. If you are attending, book your home as early as you possibly can and stay east for shorter drives. If you are not attending, know the dates anyway; the whole valley feels them. The La Quinta Arts Celebration and a run of golf and tennis tournaments also stack the down valley calendar in the cooler months.
The high desert keeps a looser calendar. Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown books live music year-round and lands surprisingly big names, and Joshua Tree's music and arts gatherings tend to be smaller, stranger, and easy to stumble into. Stargazing events and full-moon happenings ride the lunar calendar rather than the tourist one. If your trip is festival-flexible, the high desert rewards showing up and asking around.

As soon as you have tickets, and ideally before. Festival weekends are the tightest inventory of the year across the entire valley, and homes near Indio and La Quinta go first. Staying in Palm Springs is workable but adds a real drive each way, so weigh the commute against the scene.
Palm Springs' weekly street fair, held Thursday nights on Palm Canyon Drive. Several blocks close to traffic and fill with food vendors, farmers-market stands, artists, and buskers. It is family-friendly, easy to wander, and the single fastest way to feel like a local on your first night in town.
The big signature events cluster in the cooler months, and the calendar thins noticeably from early summer into fall. What remains moves indoors or after dark: casino shows, arena concerts, and high desert music rooms keep booking. Summer is the value season here, and the pool does not require tickets.
