The market
The High Desert sits well above the Coachella Valley floor, and it feels like a different place. The towns along Highway 62, including Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, and Twentynine Palms, are small and spread out, with long views between them. People come for Joshua Tree National Park, and the park rewards early starts: sunrise on the boulders, quiet trails, and cooler air before the heat builds.
Nights are the other draw. With little light pollution, the sky here is genuinely dark, and on a clear moonless night you can see the Milky Way without a telescope. Pioneertown, a Western movie set built in 1946 that grew into a tiny living town, sits up the road from Yucca Valley and is worth an evening.
Summer days run hot, often above 100 degrees, but the elevation means evenings cool down in a way the valley floor never does. Spring and fall are the sweet spots for hiking, and winter brings crisp, clear nights that can drop below freezing. Pack layers no matter the season.
The area
Three small towns anchor the High Desert, each with its own personality:
The largest of the three, with the most groceries and services, and the turnoff to Pioneertown.
The village at the park's West Entrance, with a compact strip of cafes, galleries, and outfitters.
The quieter east end of the basin, closest to the park's North Entrance.

The park has three entrances. The West Entrance sits at the village of Joshua Tree and the North Entrance at Twentynine Palms, both along the Highway 62 corridor where our homes are located. Exact distance varies home by home, so check each listing's map before you book.
Yes. The Morongo Basin has far less light pollution than the cities down the hill, and on a clear, moonless night you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye. For the darkest skies, plan around the new moon and give your eyes twenty minutes or so to adjust.
Elevation. The communities along Highway 62 sit a few thousand feet above the Coachella Valley floor. That altitude brings cooler temperatures year-round, especially after dark: summer evenings are comfortable, and winter nights can dip below freezing.

Spring and fall offer the best hiking weather in Joshua Tree National Park. Winter is quiet and clear, with cold nights. Summer days are hot, often above 100 degrees, but the elevation keeps mornings and evenings comfortable enough for an early hike or a night under the stars.
Pioneertown started in 1946 as a Western movie set built to double as a place people actually lived. Today it is a tiny community up the road from Yucca Valley, known for its preserved Western storefronts and live music. It makes an easy evening outing from any of our High Desert homes.
